Kanazawa: Oyama Shrine

Kanazawa: Oyama Shrine

This morning, after breakfast, we were met in our hotel by our guide, Ms. Chika Yoshida. She lived in the US for a while, as a student, and speaks English quite well. She has planned a walking tour for both the morning and the afternoon.

Oyama Shrine

The walk starts by walking to the nearby Oyama Shrine (尾山神社) 🗾, which was established in 1599, dedicated to Maeda Toshiie (the first lord of Kaga Domain). In 1873, it was relocated from Utatsu-yama (卯辰山), located east of Kanazawa, to its present site and renamed Oyama-jinja. Of particular interest to me was the third floor of the Oyama Shrine’s Shinmon Gate (the main gate), which features Dutch-stained-glass windows (you cannot access that floor). There are also several statues dedicated to the Maeda clan.

After the shrine, we moved on to the castle.
